“No one can go back and make a brand new start; however,
anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending….”
The idea and concept for Surf Therapy originated with Holly Baker, our founder and director, when she went to the beach to recuperate from surgery. As she swam in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and began to interact with the many people who were enjoying the sand and the surf, she came to realize that there was a great healing property in that setting—both physically and emotionally.
The relaxing motion of the waves provides a unique perspective on our daily lives and issues. The surf has been behaving in the same way for hundreds of thousands of years—an unending repetition of the rhythmic and calming motion experienced by our parents, our distant ancestors, and prehistoric humans over the millennia. That outlook offers an opportunity not to ignore or trivialize our current problems, but it does remind us that our lives are short and the earth will go on regardless of what we do or don’t do. Sometimes a step back from the trees allows us to see the forest and therefore view our own circumstances from a different vantage point.
